Soon, very soon, love will be in the air again, just like every year come mid-February. To those of you who are as clueless as I am every Valentine’s of what to get that certain someone (or certain someones, no judgement!), here are a few tips:

Geschenkidee – order online, can’t get any easier. Some cute things!

Lush – the organic soap (etc) store that you can smell from miles away have compiled some special Valentine’s Day gift sets. Perfect if your Valentine enjoys a little DIY pampering!

Townhouse – not so much lovey-dovey stuff, but check out this necklace for example, it’s so pretty that any woman will melt like butter…

Victoria’s Secret – if you happen to go to the States before Valentine’s Day, you could always pick something up form this store…. Or organise it with a friend with an US postal address. Other alternatives are of course Agent Provocateur etc, which can, for example be found at Jelmoli on Bahnhofstrasse – their underwear section is truly a gem! Sexy.-time? Well, yes, but, pretty please, do make sure you get her sizes right!

Tiffany’s – the classic also has something specific in mind for Valentine’s. ‘Nuff said.

Swarovski – slightly more affordable than the one above, but they have also compiled a list of special Valentine’s choices…

Komplementair at the Viadukt – wonderful little accessories shop with brands such as Liebeskind Berlin etc. Best part: not only for women, they also have guys accessories!

If you are a bigger fan of pampering presents, might I suggest the following links to you? Whether a full body massage or a quick manicure, being pampered is a thing that many, many people like.

Beautyssima – centrally located at Rennweg. They are lovely!

LABO Spa – also central, located at Talacker (net to Paddy Reilly’s pub, if anyone happens to know that…)

Asia Spa – at Sihl City. Wonderful treatments and excellent staff!

Hope you can get some inspiration from these ideas. Don’t forget to thank me later! 😉

Fernweh is a German word for wanting to get away, or having “itchy feet”. Much alike being homesick when traveling too far out of your comfort zone – but the other way around!

The wonderful airline of SWISS (according to me, the absolute best airline in Europe) has a sale on right now! For those of you who know what I’m talking about when I humbly try to explain how much I need to get away and see something else once in a while, this is your chance.

With prices ranging from 159CHF (Manchester, Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Belgrad) to 340CHF (Las Palmas), it is quite reasonable when traveling from Zürich. Of course, you have to be a little flexible in terms of dates and times, but they do say that flight prices are the cheapest around mid week…

So go ahead and book HERE!!

(and don’t forget to tell me where you’re going once you’re done! 🙂  )

Tuesday tip!

January 25, 2011

A little idea for those of you who don’t need a lot of sleep at night, or those of you who have the luxury of a day off tomorrow, check out Karakoe from Hell at Mascotte this evening!

It is such a hilarious concept – though we all know how karaoke usually goes down, this is only similar by concept. The songs are both old and new classics in the rockier arena. It is so much fun listening to people, both talented and not, having a go at these great songs! And, if that wasn’t enough, they are accompanied by a live band.

Starts at 22:30 tonight, doors open at 22:00.

If there is any chance that you like rock (and are ever so slightly amused by the X-Factor/Idol/DSDS etc. auditions…) please check it out! I promise you a hilarious evening!

January 24, 2011

How’d we get here again – it’s once again Monday. As some of you might have figured out, I’m not the biggest fan of Mondays. Not at all.

But I am hoping today will be a better Monday than the last few ones that seem to have flown by…

Wish me luck!

Sweet Friday

January 21, 2011

Oh sweet, sweet Friday, how I have missed you…

Anyhow, as Friday’s are so incredibly sweet, why not get something to fit your sweet mood today? I hope noone has ignored the fact that the French macaroon company Laduree have a shop in our fair city as well?

Laduree's shop in Zürich (image from

Located on Kuttelgasse 17, 8001 Zürich (right off Bahnhofstrasse), it is the ideal place to pick something up for the evening or weekend. Their selection is vast, with many wonderful flavors of macaroons, namely: Chocolate – Bitter Chocolate – Vanilla – Coffee – Rose – Pistachio – Raspberry – Blackcurrant Violet – Caramel with salted butter – Red Fruits – Orange Blossom – Liquorice – Lemon. These are only their standard selection – not including the seasons specials!

The staff is very helpful and have been known to help arranging special requests for special occasions as well.

I hope you all have a wonderfully sweet weekend – despite the snow…

January 20, 2011

One might wonder why in all the world it seems necessary to send more snow our way…? According to my latest observations, spring had already made an appearance, and I, for one, was very, very happy with that…

Oh well, nothing I can do anything about! I guess it’s back to “normal”(?) wintertime activities again; cheese fondue, hot chocolate, sledding, hot tea, shopping at shopping centers rather than in town (Glatt, which also has sales, of course), big poofy jackets, comfortable shoes (yay, a plus!), knitted sweaters and dreams of warmer places and traveling there.

What do you do to beat the winter blues?

Please, Spring, could you finally kick Winter’s a** and come stay with us, pretty please….?

Hamburger for 1,50CHF

January 18, 2011

One more thing, McDonald’s are today celebrating the 150 McD’s there are in Switzerland.

Therefore they are selling their normal hamburger for 1,50CHF – today only!

En guete everyone!

Café Henrici

January 18, 2011

Café Henrici is a great place for many things – such as coffee, chatting and meeting people. It is also amazing for another reason; concerts. Featuring smaller, less known bands, one has a great chance to catch some very good tunes without the (usually present) massive crowd…

A snapshot from Café Henrici's homepage

Being located in the middle of the Niederdorf, it is a perfect place to meet wherever direction you are coming from. And, I have also heard that their hot chocolate is to die for.

Go try it out!

Movie tip

January 17, 2011

This weekend I watched “Black Swan”, starring Nathalie  Portman and Mila Kunis, amongst others. I can only recommend it!

Black Swan poster - from

The storyline is as follows: “Nina (Portman) is a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her obsessive former ballerina mother Erica (Hershey) who exerts a suffocating control over her. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side – a recklessness that threatens to destroy her. Written by Fox Searchlight Pictures

I was completely taken aback by this movie. It is dark, it is beautiful and it is scary. Nathalie Portman does an unforgettable performance as the “Swan Queen”, and following her transformation into this role is truly brilliant. I won’t reveal more than that at this moment…

Please leave a comment and tell me what you thought of this movie!
